Midfielder Greg Bolger has confirmed he will retire from professional football. The 38-year-old, who played for Sligo Rovers during his long journey, will make his final appearance in Cork City's last home game of the season against Finn Harps this Friday night at Turner's Cross.
Bolger announced the news on social media on Sunday evening. He expressed particular satisfaction that his career will conclude at a ground that holds special memories for him.
A decorated career across six clubs
Bolger's career spanned six clubs, including Sporting Fingal, Dundalk, St Patrick’s Athletic, Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers, and two spells with Cork City. He won three Premier Division titles and four FAI Cups across three different clubs, achieving a league and cup double with St Patrick's Athletic and again with Cork City in 2017. The Wexford native also captained Cork City in last year's FAI Cup final. His final season comes as Sligo Rovers, one of his former sides, currently sit 10th in the Premier Division with 23 points from 32 games, having lost their last five matches including a 1-0 defeat to St Patrick's Athletic last month.
Cork City, who will lift the First Division title after Friday's match, described Bolger as a true Cork City Football Club and League of Ireland legend. The club said it is anticipating a big atmosphere for his farewell. Bolger thanked his teammates and reflected on his time in the game.
His final act will be to help secure a result for Cork City against Finn Harps.
