Sligo Rovers are on the brink of relegation after a 3-1 defeat to Galway United left them 11 points adrift at the bottom of the Premier Division table. The loss at The Showgrounds on 14 September 2026 saw Jimmy Keohane score two penalties for Galway United, while Cian Kavanagh gave Sligo Rovers an early lead in the 8th minute.
Stephen Walsh added Galway’s second goal six minutes before half-time, and Keohane completed his brace with a late penalty. Darren Purse’s side had not scored in their previous three league outings before Kavanagh’s strike, but the goal proved to be a consolation as Galway moved to sixth place in the table.
Sligo Rovers’ lineup included Liam Hughes in goal, with Aidan Gabbidon and Reuben Gillespie making their first starts, alongside Gareth McElroy, Carl McHugh, Sean Stewart, James McManus, Luke Young, Jack Shorrock, Archie Meekison and Kavanagh. Carl McHugh made a vital block to deny Galway United a goal, while substitutions saw Luke Pearce replace Gabbidon at 71 minutes and Kaiyne Woolery come on for Gillespie at 54 minutes. Galway United’s side featured Hugo Cunha, Gianfranco Facchineri, Anthony O’Connor, Wasiri Williams, Conor Barratt, Aaron Bolger, David Hurley, Lee Devitt, Keohane, Kris Twardek and Walsh, with Frantz Pierrot and Junior Thiam coming on for Barratt and Hurley respectively.
