Sligo Rovers' relegation from the Premier Division was confirmed on Friday night following a heavy 5-1 defeat away to Shelbourne. The result at Tolka Park ends the club's 22-year stay in the top flight, a run that began back in 2005.
Darren Purse's side had briefly shown resilience before the break. Kaiyne Woolery capitalised on a defensive mix-up to equalise right on half-time, cancelling out Daniel Kelly's 12th-minute opener for the hosts. The second half, however, brought a devastating collapse. Shelbourne scored four times in nine minutes after the restart through Ademipo Odubeko, substitute John Martin, and Milan Bernhard Mbeng, with Martin adding a fifth soon after. Shelbourne were ruthless, racking up 26 shots to Sligo's nine.
Manager Darren Purse expressed his disappointment in the aftermath. "I’m gutted for the fans," the Sligo Rovers boss said. The defeat was their fifth consecutive league loss, a run stretching over a month without a win. It leaves the club 10th in the Premier Division with 23 points from 33 games, a massive 42 points adrift of leaders Shamrock Rovers.
Sligo Rovers have one final home game in the Premier Division this season. They host Dundalk at The Showgrounds next Saturday. Their last meeting with Dundalk ended in a 1-1 draw at the end of July. After that, the focus turns to rebuilding for life in the First Division next year.
