Sligo Rovers' Late Season Push to Avoid Relegation
Sligo Rovers, currently rooted in the bottom position of the Premier Division, have made a double signing to bolster their squad and improve their chances of avoiding relegation. The club, which has been a fixture in the top flight for 21 years, finds itself six points adrift of both Drogheda United and Waterford, with just nine games remaining in the season. The signings of Luke Young and Kaiyne Woolery come as part of a late-season bid by new manager Darren Purse to rescue the team.
Experienced Players Join the Squad
Young, 33, and Woolery, 31, both bring significant experience to the team. Young, an accomplished central midfielder with nearly 600 senior career appearances in English football, has played for clubs such as Wrexham, Plymouth, and Cheltenham Town. Woolery, a versatile winger, has had a career in the UK, Greece, and Turkey. Both players have signed until the end of the current season, subject to international transfer clearance.
Purse, a former Cardiff academy coach, has leaned on personal connections to bring in these veteran players. Young, who was a former captain at Wrexham and played alongside Purse and assistant Warren Feeney at Plymouth, will be a familiar face to the manager. Purse praised Young's career and the familiarity he brings, stating, 'Luke is in our position now when we were at Plymouth given that we were the elder statesmen. Both Luke and Kaiyne are that little bit older. I think they’ll help not only the younger boys but also lads like Carl McHugh who is a lone voice a little bit and Gareth McElroy who’s an exceptional young leader and I feel the new boys can bring him on.'
The signings are part of Purse's strategy to bring in experienced players to help the younger talent in the squad. Purse explained, 'We’ve had a lot of offers of younger players here but I don’t think that’s what we need at this moment. I want to sign the right ones that give us the best possible chance of getting out of the position we’re in.'
