Darren Purse takes charge at Sligo Rovers
Former Premier League defender Darren Purse has been appointed as the new manager of Sligo Rovers on an 18-month contract. The 46-year-old arrives at the Showgrounds from Cardiff City, where he worked with the club's youth teams and served as assistant manager. He replaces John Russell, who left to take over at Shelbourne earlier this month. Sligo Rovers finished 7th in the Premier Division last season with 41 points from 36 games, ending on a 2-game winning run.
What does Purse bring to the role?
Purse, who scored a last-minute penalty in the 2001 League Cup final for Birmingham City, brings a wealth of experience to Sligo. He spent almost five years at Cardiff City, overseeing their Under-23 and U21 sides and managing their loan programme. His appointment comes as Sligo Rovers sit bottom of the Premier Division table after 24 games this season, having scored 42 goals and conceded 54.
The challenge ahead
The new manager faces an immediate task of improving Sligo Rovers' fortunes, starting with their home clash against Drogheda United this weekend. Purse acknowledges the importance of short-term results, stating, "You can have a long-term plan, but right now it's about winning football matches." The club is currently 25 points behind league leaders Shamrock Rovers, with their last result being a 2-1 win over Shamrock Rovers on November 1, 2025.

Sligo Rovers chairperson Tommy Higgins welcomed Purse, saying, "He impressed us with his technical and interpersonal skills and with his vision for Sligo Rovers. We look forward to working with Darren in the seasons ahead." Declan Boyle, who has been leading preparations on an interim basis, will assist Purse before returning to his role as Sligo’s men’s U20 manager.
